Himalayas

It all started with a daydream and seemed totally impossible, flying a rotorcraft in the Himalayas was simply not in store for me. After a sleepless night at Annapurna Base Camp I was standing in the cold mountain shade of the dawning daylight at an altitude where the peaks of the Swiss Alps sit enthroned. Another 4000 meters above me the first sunlight just lit the summit of Annapurna. In deep awe of the Himalayas separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau suddenly it crossed my mind - flying up here (instead of 4 days trekking 8 hours a day), would be the thing!

Does Nepal even operate helicopters? What would it be like to fly at this altitude and possibly even higher? Is mankind meant to experience such adventures and what is my own destiny? More questions kept coming while I was schlepping myself down and again away from the highest mountains in the world.

after that I first would work as a pilot in the Swiss Alps, then in Sudan for the United Nations, 3 years later in the Pamir Mountains but then eventually I became the first none Nepali but validated helicopter Captain who was allowed to fly all by himself in that most of all majestic mountain range. It took another year though until I was appointed a rescue mission to Annapurna Base Camp. I could not believe my own eyes when I finally flew up to 'ABC' through a narrow valley where I hiked up 6 years earlier and my rotors were breaking the holy silence of the same early morning light where I once manifested an incredible dream that just became reality.
