Pamir Mountains

'We're back in the USSR, you don't know how lucky you are!'; the Beatles are rocking on the white album. I must have been about 10 years old when I requested my mother to translate the song from English into German so I would understand what was going on. My imagination was running wild and it was almost impossible to grasp the concept that the biggest nation on this planet would build a wall on its border and shoot the people who tried to escape. A territory of mystery, where the people spoke for me yet another secret language called Russian.

25 years later, the wall long gone, I found myself in the now independent Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan where a large part of the Pamir mountains are located, as well known as 'the roof of the world'. Working for the Aga Khan Foundation I flew a 15 million dollar chopper with cutting edge technology and discovered more than just beautiful landscapes, remote and pristine areas, to which I transported specialists helping the poor people to get a better life.
